06/07/1918 - HPR ?	Birch Vale Print works appealed
for Fred Brooks - Grade 2, a Dye House Labourer
and Ezra Jepson - Grade 1, a Mason’s Labourer. 
Mr. Heap, their Assistant Manager appeared and
stated that Mr. Brooks had been born in 1875 and
Mr. Jepson in 1874.  Referring to the Print works,
he said that in normal times some 20 men were
employed in that Department, but now there were
only 9.  He also said that it was a mistake
calling Ezra Jepson a Mason’s Labourer as he was
also a Fireman and an Ash Wheeler.  Mr. Brooks
stated that he had one son in the Army and had
four children at home and Mr. Jepson stated he had
three children at home.  No certificate was
granted, but it was recommended that there would
be no call up for either man, before 31/07/1918.

27/07/1918 - HPR   The Birch Vale Print works
appealed to the County Military Tribunal against
the local Tribunal’s decision for refusing an
exemption certificate for Fred Brooks and Ezra
Jepson.  Fred Brooks has one son in the Army
[George] and another will soon be 18 year of age
[Fred Jnr]. Ezra Jepson has 3 children.  The
County Tribunal took the view that calico printing
is a “luxury” trade and dismissed the appeal.

24/05/1919 - HPR   Master Wilfred Jepson, son of
Ezra Jepson, Jumble Lane has broken his right
arm.

8/11/1919 HPR   ?	Mrs. Jepson, Mount Villas, Birch
Vale wrote stating that she has had to leave her
home and being unable to find another, asked to be
placed on the list for persons requiring homes to
be built by the Council.

30th September 1923 - Driver Ezra Jepson  - aged:
49 - No. 438697 - serving with No.3 Reserve Horse
Transport Company, Army Service Corps.

Ezra was born at Bugsworth during the June quarter
1874, the son of James & Elizabeth Jepson (nee
Williamson).

The 1881 Census for Brierley Green, Chinley,
Bugsworth, & Brownside, Derbyshire lists Ezra aged
7 and records that his father - James Jepson was
employed as a Quarryman.  James died in 1884,
aged: 53.

Still residing at Brierley Green, Chinley,
Bugsworth, & Brownside at the time of the 1891
census.  Now aged 17 and employed as a Stone
Quarryman.  The head of household was his widowed
mother.

Ezra's sister, Elizabeth Jepson married Arthur
Farrow in 1899.  By 1901, Ezra and his widowed
mother have moved into 2 Didsbury Terrace,
Hayfield with Arthur and Elizabeth.  Ezra is now
aged 27 and employed as a Quarry Stone Sett
Maker.

Ezra married Arthur's sister - Gertrude Farrow, on
the 2nd September 1901.  She was actually born
Emily Gertrude Farrow, but married as Gertrude
Farrow.  The Farrow family were all employed at
the Paper Mill - as a 13 year old, Emily was
employed as a Paper Cutter's Assistant.

The 1911 Census record for Ellers Bank, Hayfield,
lists Ezra as the Head, he is now aged 37, married
and still employed as a Stone Quarryman.  Also
listed was his wife - Emily Gertrude Jepson and
their two children - Mary & Wilfred Jepson.

His WO363 documents survived the London Blitz of
1940 and record that he married Emily Gertrude
Farrow at the Glossop Parish Church on the 2nd
September 1901.  He and Emily had three children:-
 Mary Elizabeth - b.16/10/1902;  Wilfred -
b.03/06/1904;  Emma Gertrude - b.03/06/1915.  He
resided at High Street, Hayfield.

Conscripted into the Army Service Corps on 15th
August 1918 - Category B1.  Accepted onto the Army
payroll at Reception Centre, The Castle, Chester. 
  Drafted to the No.3 Reserve Horse Transport
Company based at Woolwich, London.   He was aged:
44 years 77 days.  He was 5 feet 3 1/8th inches in
height.  His chest measurements were 32½ to 34½
inches and he had a scar over his right eye. 
There is no MIC for him.

Discharged from the Army on the 26th February
1919.  He died of Phthisis (Consumption or T.B.)
at his home on High Street on the 30th September
1923, aged: 49.  His son Wilfred was present at
his death.

He was buried in an unmarked grave in Hayfield
Cemetery on the 3rd October 1923.  He is
commemorated on the Wesleyan Chapel Memorial, but
only as having served, not as having died, as the
memorial was created before his death.  For the
same reason, he is not commemorated on the Birch
Vale Print works Memorial.

6/10/1923HPR  The death has been announced of Ezra
Jepson of Jumble Lane, Hayfield.  Aged 49 he died
early on Sunday morning after a long illness
[T.B.].  A native of Bugsworth, he was connected
with the Bugsworth Church, but since moving to
Hayfield he joined the Hayfield Wesleyan Chapel. 
He played football for the Furness Vale and Whaley
Bridge Football Clubs.  He was also a good bat at
cricket.  A quiet and unassuming man, he was for a
time employed in the local quarries, but latterly
was employed at the Birch Vale Print works. 
Buried in Hayfield Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon
with the funeral arrangements by Messrs. Hadfield
& Mason.
